What are the most common paths to getting into a top American ballet company?
One of the major goals of Data Pointes is to aid in career decision-making by providing relevant data – empowering dancers, educators, and parents. After a lot of hard work, I am proud to announce the creation of The American Ballet Network (desktop: https://jasonyeung.shinyapps.io/datapointes/ , mobile: https://jasonyeung.shinyapps.io/datapointesmobile/ ), an interactive tool designed to do just that.
How It Works
The app maps out the career paths for all dancers in Houston Ballet, Pacific Northwest Ballet, Boston Ballet, Joffrey Ballet, San Francisco Ballet, New York City Ballet, and American Ballet Theatre for the 2018 – 2019 Season. You can explore a school to see how many of their students ended up in these companies. You can select a company to see where they hire from the most. Or select a particular dancer to explore their training.
The information is not perfect – all information is from company websites on January 1st, 2019. Some of the dancers had incomplete information in their bios or had ambiguous wording. Also, movement between companies has not been added at this time. I am looking to add more features as well as data from the upcoming season in the future. This is something which will be improved over time so if you have any suggestions, please contact us – we would love to hear them. And of course, more Data Pointes blog posts are on the way to help you unpack this information! – J
